Barcelona fined following El Clasico disturbances

Barcelona have been handed a fine of €1500 following fan protests during their El Clasico clash on December 18.

The Catalan side have been reprimanded by La Liga’s competitions committee following controversial scenes during their 0-0 draw with Zinedine Zidane’s side.

Local police had confirmed they were implementing additional security measures in Barcelona city for the rearranged tie, however there were planned pro-independence protests outside the stadium, with some supporters setting fire to bins after the game.

However it is events inside the Camp Nou, which the club have been punished for, after referee Alejandro Hernandez twice stopped the game, to allow stewards to clear beach balls from the pitch.

The balls were thrown by home supporters in agreement with wider protests centred on the subject of Catalan independence.

Alongside the fine, reports in Marca claim the defending La Liga champions have also been warned about a potential stadium closure for future games if these incidents are repeated again this season.
