Barcelona slip up in Real Sociedad La Liga test

Barcelona have handed an edge to arch rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga title race, with a 2-2 draw away at Real Sociedad.

Ernesto Valverde's side face Los Blancos in their eagerly anticipated El Clasicop clash next week, and Zinedine Zidane's side can go above Barcelona ahead of that, if they beat Valencia tomorrow.

The Basque side caused problems for the defending champions from kick off, and Imanol Alguacil's side took a deserved lead on 12 minutes.

Sergio Busquets conceded a penalty for a pull on Sociedad defender Diego Llorente, and Mikel Oyarzabal confidently dispatched the penalty beyond Marc Ter Stegen.

Barcelona did look to rally, but Sociedad restricted them to half chances from Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann in the opening stages.

However, despite being the better side in the first half, Sociedad allowed the visitors back into the game just before the break, through their former star Griezmann.

Suarez delayed his through ball into the French international, and Griezmann held off two defenders clip the ball over Remiro for the equaliser on 38 minutes.

Valverde's side looked in determined mood after the break, with Suarez edging them in front on 49 minutes, as he swept home Lionel Messi's square ball.

But the away side were unable to build from there, and Sociedad got themselves back into on 62 minutes, as Alexander Isak benefited from Ter Stegen's error to tap home from close range.

La Blaugrana did push for a late winner, however they were unable to break down an organised home defence, with Gerard Pique controversially denied a late penalty after clashing with Llorente.
