Former Spain boss Robert Moreno is ‘shattered’ and has hit back over Luis Enrique’s claims that he has been disloyal.
Luis Enrique stepped down from the role of Spain boss earlier this year to look after his terminally ill daughter, who tragically then passed away – with Moreno replacing him in the hotseat.
Moreno guided Spain to the European Championships next summer with an unbeaten record – seven wins from nine games – but has now been relieved of his duties by the Spanish FA.
Moreno – previous number two at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad but had repeatedly publicly said he would step down should Enrique feel he could return to the role.
Luis Enrique told a press conference on Wednesday, as cited by Marca: “I do not want anyone like that (Moreno) on my team.”
He claimed that Moreno had eyed the job for himself and alleged that he had been ‘disloyal’ to him during the process – claims which Moreno has now strenuously denied.
“I want to express my love and support and give him a hug,” Moreno began, citing Luis Enrique, as quoted by Marca.
“And I told him that, just as I had said at a presn conference, that I would step aside if he wanted to return, I told him that in person.
“My surprise was his answer to this: ‘I think it's perfect but I don't count on you anymore, but I do with the rest of the staff.’ I was in a state of shock.
“I left and as soon as I left I let it be known to all the staff. Because all staff has been aware of everything that has happened. Because I have not made any decision without their support.
“For the past week, or 10 days, I have been shattered. Wondering what I had done wrong so Luis Enrique wouldn't want to tell me more.
“I intended to call him and ask him what had happened, but they were difficult times and I have not.
“I do not understand why he has said these things (about disloyalty) because I only ever accepted my position with his blessing.
“Had I not accepted the position, they (the Spanish FA) would have appointed a permanent manager and Luis Enrique would not be able to return.
“I have been faithful to him over nine years, I have been out of work when he has and stayed loyal.”
Luis Enrique’s staff members Jesús Casas (promoted to assistant), Rafel Pol (physical trainer) and Joaquín Valdés will all remain in the setup.
