Former Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano joining Estudiantes

Former Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano is set to leave the Chinese Super League to join Argentinian side Estudiantates, report TyC Sports.

The experienced former Argentina international has also represented River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham and Liverpool during his playing career but now wants to play in his native country.

Juan Sebastian Veron, president of the Argentine club, has personally visited Mascherano to convince him of the move and not to accept an offer from MLS club Inter Miami.

The 35-year-old joined Chinese Super League outfit Hebei China Fortune in January 2018 and his contract is due to expire in the Far East.

The report claims the former Blaugrana player wants to join Estudiantes La Plata in his native country and has no intention of remaining in the Far East.

Estudiantes are coached by Gabriel Milito, a former central defender who represented Barcelona during his playing career.

Mascherano scored one goal across 334 appearances for the Catalan giants between 2010 and 2018 and he won 147 caps for his nation.
