Juan Carlos Unzue not returning to Spain setup

Former Celta Vigo and Girona boss Juan Carlos Unzue will not be appointed Luis Enrique’s number two for the Spanish national team.

The report comes from Cadena Cope and follows a report in the same outlet on Monday which claimed Unzue would form part of the new-look team under Enrique.

Former Barcelona boss Enrique stepped down from the role earlier this year due to personal circumstances, with his assistant Robert Moreno – who has now once more been replaced – stepping into the role.

Moreno – previously number two to Enrique at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad but has repeatedly said he would step down should Enrique feel he could return to the role.

Unzue was most recently boss at second-tier Girona but managed them for just 12 games – recording five wins and six defeats – before being dismissed on 21 October.

The former Barcelona and Sevilla goalkeeper has also had stints at the helm of Numancia, Racing Santander and Celta Vigo, while previously forming part of Enrique’s coaching staff across a number of clubs.
