Robert Moreno yet to speak on Spain departure

Robert Moreno has yet to speak to the media following his exit from the Spanish national team on Monday night.

Luis Enrique has returned to coach La Roja ahead of the European Championships next summer with Moreno – who took charge of nine games, leading his side to seven wins and two draws – stepping aside.

Moreno – Enrique’s previous number two at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad but has repeatedly said he would step down should Enrique feel he could return to the role.

A report in Marca now details the events of the past few days, while Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales said on Tuesday: “Robert messaged me to say ‘I want to agree my departure and not be an obstacle for the return of Luis Enrique’.

“I asked Robert to be here this morning, but he didn't want to come. We don't consider it a resignation or as us sacking him. We consider it to be Robert’s decision.”

Enrique was appointed national team boss following Spain's exit from the 2018 World Cup in the last 16.

He was in charge for the Nations League, where Spain failed to reach the semi-finals, and remained in place for the beginning of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

However, he temporarily stopped taking charge of matches from March this year before officially stepping down three months later due to personal circumstances.

Moreno guided La Roja to next summer’s finals, including a 5-0 win over Romania on Monday and reportedly said a tearful goodbye to the player’s after the game.
