Juan Carlos Unzue to be Luis Enrique’s assistant for Spain

Former Celta Vigo and Girona boss Juan Carlos Unzue is set to be appointed as Luis Enrique’s number two for the Spanish national team.

Former Barcelona boss Enrique stepped down from the role earlier this year due to personal circumstances, with his assistant Robert Moreno stepping into the role.

Moreno – previously number two to Enrique at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad but has repeatedly said he would step down should Enrique feel he could return to the role.

A press conference for Tuesday has been confirmed which is expected to announce the return of Enrique as Spain Coach, Cadena Cope also reporting Unzue will form part of the new-look team.

Unzue was most recently boss at second-tier Girona but managed them for just 12 games – recording five wins and six defeats – before being dismissed on 21 October.

The former Barcelona and Sevilla goalkeeper has also had stints at the helm of Numancia, Racing Santander and Celta Vigo, while previously forming part of Enrique’s coaching staff.
