Barcelona eye defensive reinforcements in January

Barcelona are considering a January move for a back up central defender, according to reports in Marca.

The Catalan side are top of La Liga currently, however they have experienced issues in defence since the start of the season, with Ernesto Valverde hampered by injuries and suspensions.

First choice pairing Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet have both already served one game bans, but the duo have remained relatively injury free so far this season.

However their continues to be concerns over the long term fitness of French international Samuel Umtiti, who has played just two La Liga games so far in 2019-20.

He missed the behind closed doors friendly win over Cartagena, for those first team players not away on international duty, due to injury, furthering the rumours that he may no longer be considered as a first team option by Valverde.

Valverde's only other options at centre back are inexperienced pair Jean-Clair Todibo and Ronald Araujo, but neither have offered real competition to Pique and Lenglet.

La Blaugrana allowed Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen to leave on a free transfer in the summer, with Juan Miranda joining German side Schalke on loan.
