Atletico Madrid will not sign despite Diego Costa injury

Atletico Madrid will not make any January signings despite a three-month injury layoff for Diego Costa, report Marca.

It will not be until early next week that the exact path of Costa’s recovery will be decided, adds the report, but it is likely that he will be out of action until February at the earliest.

There had been fears that the striker could miss the remainder of the season but the expectations now are that he will be back for the final three months.

The fresh report claims that Los Rojiblancos are operating at 100% of their salary budget and have the idea that the 22 players who started the season for them will also finish it.

Atleti would need to sell players before being in a position to sign but it is claimed that the club are not actively looking either to sell any of the first-team squad members and have nobody in mind that must come in then.

Alvaro Morata was added to the squad in the January transfer window last season but that followed on from exits for Gelson Martins and Jonny Castro – who joined Wolverhampton Wanderers permanently, while Costa was also out at the time with an injury.

Diego Simeone’s squad underwent a mass overhaul in the summer with a series of significant exits and star arrivals.
