Man City’s Rodri: Premier League more competitive than La Liga

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has stated the English Premier League is ‘more competitive’ than La Liga in Spain.

The English champions triggered the 23-year-old’s €70m release clause at Atletico Madrid in summer and despite picking up a hamstring injury, has already made 14 first-team appearances this campaign.

The Spain international was deployed as a central defender in recent weeks including in the weekend defeat at Liverpool – which left Pep Guardiola’s side in fourth place and nine points from the top.

The holding midfielder previously spent one season at Atletico after joining from Villarreal in the summer of 2018 for €25m.

“When you change your environment, it's because you think you're going to improve and the Premier League is more competitive,” Rodri told a press conference, as cited by Marca.

“I have already learned a lot from Pep Guardiola – he is how he appears on camera, very competitive and hard-working, he adds a lot to my game and is a great influence.

“Playing as a central defender? You have to adapt, and when you are asked to play in those positions then you must learn.”

Rodri has won seven caps for the Spanish national team, with the first coming in March 2018 – and looks likely to feature against both Malta and Romania this month.
