River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo dismisses Barcelona links

River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo has moved to quieten speculation that he could be replacing Ernesto Valverde as Barcelona boss in 2020.

The former Argentinian international has been heavily linked as the frontrunner to replace Valverde, should he leave the Camp Nou at the end of the current campaign.

However, despite the growing rumours of Valverde's exit, and Gallardo potential arrival, he insisted he is only focused on the job in hand with River Plate.

"No one has contacted me about anything (related to Barcelona)," he told Globo Esporte.

"We are also heading into a very important phase of matches for River Plate, in a decisive period of the season."

"I cannot comment on rumours, as I have not been contacted."

"There have been no discussions on my future."

Gallardo has led River Plate to two Copa Libertadores titles, and they face Brazilian side Flamengo in the final before the end of November, as they look to defend their 2018 title.

Barcelona agreed to extend Valverde's contract into the 2019-20 season, mid way through last season, and the club does have an option to extend it for a further year - with a decision on that, expected early in 2020.
