Martin Odegaard: It will be special to play against Real Madrid

Martin Odegaard admits it will be ‘special’ for him to play at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid: “I usually watch their matches.”

The Norway international has starred in the opening weeks of the campaign for Real Sociedad after joining them on a two-year loan deal from Los Blancos.

The Basque side are scheduled to play at Madrid on the first weekend back following the upcoming international break, and Odegaard is excited to take part against his parent club.

“It will be a bit special for me,” Odegaard told Radio Marca, when asked about the upcoming match.

“I still have friends there and I talk to players, like Fede Valverde. I'm glad he does so well. And, if I can, I see Madrid’s matches. All their players are good, I like Luka Modric!

“I joined Madrid because I was going to train with the first team, with the best players in the world, and play with the second team, which had Zidane as Coach!

“Now, I'm lucky to play in a very good team, that's why everything is easier for me. We are playing very well. We want to be in Europe, but all the teams want it. We have to work a lot every day. And this is an squad so special that I have never seen in my life.

“I am very happy here to be here for two years. That length of time was very important for me, because I have changed a lot, and it is not good to change too much.

“My plan is to stay here for two years, but it depends on many things A girlfriend from San Sebastian so that I stay here forever? I don't know, I prefer the girls from Norway I think!

“My ankle is improving a little every day, but I have to rest a little. It is not a very serious injury, but the impact was very hard. I played against Levante, but with some discomfort and that's why we did some tests.”

He has spent the last two seasons out on loan, at Heerenveen and Vitesse respectively, before joining the Basque club at the start of the season.

It has been said that should the capital club wish to recall Odegaard from his loan spell at the Anoeta, they would have to pay the Basque club a €2m compensation package, although this has since been played down.

Odegaard has scored twice and provided an assist in his first 10 league games for La Real and he has been tipped to be the long-term successor to one of Madrid’s current stars, most probably Luka Modric.
