Leganes confirm appointment of Javier Aguirre

Leganes have confirmed the appointment of experienced Mexican boss Javier Aguirre until the end of the current season.

The club are rooted to the foot of La Liga and went down 2-1 at home to Eibar on Sunday under interim boss Luis Cembranos – who will remain at the club – who had overseen the sole victory of the campaign against Real Mallorca the previous week.

However, a five-goal midweek loss at Real Madrid coupled with the loss against the Basque side is said to have accelerated the club’s decision to find a permanent successor to Mauricio Pellegrino.

The Argentine was appointed at Butarque in the summer of 2018 and led the club to a respectable 13th placed finish last season, with 45 points from their 38 league games.

Only Real Valladolid scored fewer than Lega’s 37 La Liga goals last season and this season has seen the side goal-shy once more – scoring just six times in 11 outings.

Leganes are three points behind second-from-bottom Espanyol while Celta Vigo are a further one point ahead and Lega are six points from safety.

Aguirre has previously coached a plethora of teams in Spain including Atletico Madrid, Osasuna, Real Zaragoza and, most recently, Espanyol between 2012 and 2014.

He has also coached a variety of international sides – Mexico, Japan and Egypt – the latter of whom he left earlier this year.

Aguirre will make his debut on the Leganes bench on Friday night at the Reale Arena against Real Sociedad.
