Real Betis players ask for Quique Setien return

Real Betis players have asked the club to reappoint former boss Quique Setien should they sack current Coach Rubi, say reports.

Setien left Los Verdiblancos this summer and was replaced by Rubi – who guided Espanyol into Europe last summer – but who has struggled to make a strong start at Betis.

The Seville-based club lie in La Liga’s relegation zone with just nine points from their opening nine rounds of action, having fallen to a 3-1 defeat at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

It is claimed by both Cadena Ser and El Desmarque, drawing on reports from Canal Sur, that senior players have requested to Betis president Angel Haro to consider Setien’s return to the club.

However, it is also said that Rubi will remain in his post for the weekend’s Andalusian derby at high-flying Granada this weekend.

Setien was appointed at Betis at the start of the 2017-18 campaign, leading them to a 6th-place finish – their highest since 2005, and a return to European football for the first time in five seasons.

However, the Andalusian club suffered a sharp downturn in form in the final six months of his stint and only secured a top-half finish on the final day of the campaign.

Setien led Betis to victories at Barcelona, Real Madrid and Milan last season, alongside defeating Atletico Madrid.
