Manuel Neuer Germany’s number one – Joachim Low

Germany boss Joachim Low has reinstated Manuel Neuer is his first-choice goalkeeper but Marc-Andre Ter Stegen will be given opportunities.

There has been a media furore over the situation after Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness threatened to boycott his players from the national team should Neuer lose his slot to the Barcelona goalkeeper.

The issue has grown into a problem for Germany with both goalkeepers widely regarded as being world class but Neuer being the long-term first choice at national level.

Both goalkeepers are said to believe they are entitled to be the first choice selection for Die Mannschaft although boss Low is said to have ruled out any outside influences on his selection process.

“We all can just be delighted to have two world class keepers in Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen,” Low said upon announcing his squad, in quotes cited by ESPN.

“I have said it many times before that Manuel Neuer is our captain going towards the European Championships and thus also our No. 1, if nothing extraordinary happens.”

“Ter Stegen will play against Argentina in Dortmund (and then) Neuer will then play in Tallin, that is what we also discussed with the goalkeepers.”
