Martin Odegaard: I’m staying at Real Sociedad for two years

Martin Odegaard has confirmed he wants to stay at Real Sociedad for the full length of his two-year loan spell from Real Madrid.

The Norway international has starred in the opening weeks of the campaign for La Real after joining them on a two-year loan deal from Los Blancos.

He has spent the last two seasons out on loan, at Heerenveen and Vitesse respectively, before joining the Basque club at the start of the season.

Subsequent reports have claimed that the 20-year-old is earning €2m annually with Real Sociedad – his full salary – but the Madrid club can recall him after just one season should they so wish.

It is said that should the capital club wish to recall Odegaard from his loan spell at the Anoeta, they would have to pay the Basque club a €2m compensation package.

Odegaard has scored twice and provided an assist in his first seven league games for La Real.

“My intention is to play here two years, that is important to me and I haven’t thought about anything else,” Odegaard told ESPN Deportes.

“I have changed teams for two seasons in a row. For young players and for me it is also good to have some stability. That's why I want to stay here for two years.

“Real Sociedad are a great club and hopefully we can play in Europe next season. My intention is to stay two years.

“There were many interested teams but for me it is important to have the feeling that the club really loves me and that their football style adapts to my characteristics.

“These kinds of things are more important than playing the Champions League at this stage of my life.

“The Coach, the philosophy and the project are more important. That was really what inspired me to come here.

“I felt that the project was perfect for me. I felt the club really loved me and I liked the game idea that the Coach had. It was the perfect combination for me. It seemed the right choice.

“In a way I feel that Spain is my home. It was beautiful to return because my goal is to play for Real Madrid and Real Sociedad is the right club if you want to achieve that some day.

“My dream is to play for Real Madrid and I hope I’m still a Real Madrid player 10 years from now,

“There are many young players in Real Madrid, both in the club and on other teams, so there are many young talents and I hope that one day we can play together. I have played with some of them in Castilla and it would be good to play with them (in the first team).

“I feel like I’m playing more maturely. I’m creating more plays, running more and I feel stronger. I think this is all part of my development as a player.”
