Malaga’s Qatari owners come under renewed pressure

Malaga owner Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani is under increasing pressure from all sides as the club’s off-field crisis deepens.

As reported by Marca earlier this month, the Andalusian club need a boost in finances in the region of €5-6m to carry on operating in the second tier beyond the new year.

Reus were automatically relegated from the second-tier last season, were banned from professional football for the next three years and been hit by a €250k fine.

Indeed, previous reports claimed that whilst the possibility of Reus being relegated last year stood at 100% due to the finances, the same chance of the Andalusian club going this year stands at 75%.

The report adds that even if Malaga manage to avoid being relegated by the authorities this season, it may be an even worse outcome ahead of next season.

It claims that in such an event, the Costa del Sol club will remain in the second tier but be banned from signing any new players while also seeing further slashes to their current budget.

Malaga have a budget of less than €10m while they have sold star players such as Javi Ontiveros (Villarreal) and Jony (Lazio), while summer signing Shinji Okazaki had to leave without a playing a game for the club – joining Huesca.

If Malaga do not increase capital and sell assets (players), it is ‘almost certain’ they will be demoted by the league authorities.

Sheikh Abdullah is from the Qatari ruling family and a distant relative of Qatar's previous ruler Sheikh Hamad and bought Malaga back in 2010.

Political parties in the Andalusian city are said to have come together to propose motions to increase the owner’s transparency and to strip him of honours, as reported by Marca.

Malaga have just one win from their opening eight matches in the Segunda, sitting one place outside the relegation zone.
