Alvaro Morata suspended for Madrid derby

Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata will be suspended for Saturday night’s Madrid derby against his former club, it has been confirmed.

The striker was sent-off after both he and Real Mallorca’s Xisco Campos were booked for squaring up late in the evening La Liga clash, with Morata then quickly shown a second yellow card after dissent.

Morata then angrily told Spanish media after the match: “Let Xisco Campos say it (what was said) if he has the guts, I did nothing.”

Cadena Cope have confirmed that the striker will be suspended for one match following the incident, with an appeal from the club proving unsuccessful.

The 26-year-old striker has not netted since the opening day of the season, when his header was enough to defeat Getafe.

Morata left Madrid in the summer of 2017 to join Chelsea in a deal worth a reported €65m, but returned to Spanish football to join Los Rojiblancos – where he started his youth career – earlier this year.
