Barcelona keen on signing US star Megan Rapinoe

Barcelona are hopeful of signing winger and United States international Megan Rapinoe, according to a report in ESPN FC.

The experienced forward is currently at Seattle Reign FC and is one of three female candidates for FIFA’s The Best award on Monday, along with Alex Morgan and England international Lucy Bronze.

Rapinoe starred in this summer’s World Cup triumph for her nation and she quickly became the iconic player of the tournament, both for her levels of performance and for her statements.

The 34-year-old is said to be open to a move to European football and could join Barca – who have made a strong start to the league season, defeating Tacon 9-1 and Atletico Madrid 6-1, alongside a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

"I think we're in a position to be able to sign that level of player," Blaugrana director Maria Teixidor told Gol when asked about Rapinoe, the report cites.

"She is a fantastic speaker, I almost see her having a political career or being an activist in the future.

"I think it is good that women who have the chance are able to speak of the reality that still exists today [for women at] the highest level. People with such integrity and awareness in that fight are so important for so many people and those who take on that leadership role deserve all the respect."

Jenni Hermoso and Caroline Graham Hansen were two high-profile signings secured by Barcelona this summer, while they are now keen on ex-Lyon star Rapinoe.
