Julen Lopetegui: Sevilla deserved a draw

Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui believes his team ‘matched’ Real Madrid in their La Liga clash and were unlucky not to secure a draw.

Karim Benzema’s header midway through the second half gave the points to Los Blancos but Lopetegui – who was sacked as Madrid boss a year ago – believes the Andalusian side were unfortunate.

He explained how his side matched Zinedine Zidane’s team all over the park but needed to be more penetrative in the final third.

“The team fought until the end and we did not give up,” Lopetegui told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“What we were missing was the final pass or the killer ball in the final third, and it is a shame we did not take at least one point because we were equal to Madrid in this match.

“In the first half we have had more losses of the ball and in the second half we had less, but we lacked clarity.

“We made a great effort and I honestly think the match was very close – we did a lot of things well but must be sharper in the final third.”
