POST MATCH: FC Barcelona held at Borussia Dortmund in Champions League return

FC Barcelona kicked off their Champions League return with a 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

Ernesto Valvderde opted to bring Luis Suarez back into the starting line up, after he netted two goals off the bench in the 5-2 weekend La Liga win at home to Valencia CF.

However, the Uruguayan was unable to spark the Catalan side into life in a first half of very few clear cut chances for either side.

Gerard Pique headed over from a corner, and Marco Reus forced a save from Marc Ter Stegen in the opening 45 minutes at the Signal Iduna Park.

Valverde brought club captain Lionel Messi on for his first appearance of the season, with 30 minutes to go, however it was the home side that had the better chances to win the game.

Reus was denied from the penalty spot by Ter Stegen on 57 minutes, before substitute Julian Brandt with 12 minutes to go, with the German goal keeper pulling off another late stop from Reus.

FC Barcelona host Inter Milan in their next Champions League game, at the Camp Nou on October 2nd.
