Spain take on The Faroe Islands tonight (19:45 UK time) in matchday six of La Roja’s EURO 2020 qualification campaign.
Coach Robert Moreno will be buoyed by their tense but ultimately positive victory away in Romania and will look to strengthen their hold as group leaders in Gijón at El Molinón.
Spain are halfway through their Group F campaign and it’s a case of the perfect start with five wins from five attained.
Last time out in the Arena Națională in Romania, Spain hung on for a nervy triumph 1-2 courtesy of a penalty by Sergio Ramos and Paco Alcácer.
Captain Ramos is the countries leading goal scorer in the group stage with four goals thanks to his strike in Bucharest. He also looks to equal the record of most caps for his country at 167, with former goalkeeping great Iker Casillas holding that honour.
La Roja will most likely rotate the squad for this match after their physically exerting game against Romania so expect to see a few changes to personnel in the Spanish ranks. The likes of Thiago Alcântara, Rodri and Mario Hermoso could all feature for La Roja tonight.
In terms of their opposition, the Faroe Islands come into tonight’s contest on the back of a heavy home defeat to Sweden (0-4) and currently are yet to get off the mark with no points and just three goals in their favour, conceding 16 along the way.
In the reverse fixture back in June, Spain won away comfortably 1-4 and will be looking to capitalize once more on another positive night in front of goal. Manager of The Faroe’s, Lars Olsen, knows he will have the most uphill struggles possible to outwit this confident Spanish team.
The manager has been at the helm for eight years and is no stranger to this competition – as the former defender captained his country Denmark to glory in the 1992 European Championships.
However, it is the tallest of orders for a side who are made up of players from, by in large, Scandinavian countries.
Their top goal scorer is the 28 year old Jóan Símun Edmundsson, who has seven goals in 53 appearances for his country. The striker currently plies his trade in the second tier of the Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld.
It would represent a massive shock if there was anything else but a convincing victory for La Roja in Gijón and to collect a sixth consecutive win in their march to European Championship qualification.
