Diego Simeone: Current Atletico Madrid not as good as 2014

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has cooled talk that his side are title contenders despite their perfect start to La Liga.

The Argentine went as far as saying that his current team were not as strong as his side who won the league title in 2014, reinstating their youth and relative lack of experience.

Los Rojiblancos have won each of their first three league games and are currently five points ahead of Barcelona and four of Real Madrid following the early rounds of games.

Atleti notched up early 1-0 victories over Madrid rivals Getafe and Leganes, before dramatically coming from two goals down to defeat Eibar 3-2 with a last minute goal.

“Repeating that perfect start to La Liga is not too important,” Simeone told reporters.

“Because we had players like Raul Garcia, Thiago and Gabi in our team back then and now my players are very young.

“We have youngsters like Thomas Partey, Joao Felix, Thomas Lemar, Renan Lodi, Mario Hermoso, Saul Niguez.

“When we won the league in that 2013/14 season, my players were better and now we are building a team, where each game is a final.”
