Atletico Madrid hurt by Alvaro Morata knee injury

Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata has suffered a ‘moderate’ injury to his right knee, the club have confirmed.

The club confirmed the news on Thursday morning but did not give an indication of when the Spain international was likely to be available for selection once more.

“The rojiblanco striker suffered a twist of his knee during Wednesday afternoon training and has undergone radiological tests confirming that he has a moderate-grade sprain,” read an Atleti club statement.

Thankfully for Atleti, Morata’s absence coincides with the return to selection for teammate Diego Costa – who has been unavailable for selection for the past 148 days, as Marca outline.

Costa has been banned from Spanish top flight action since his red card against Barcelona back in April, which saw him receive a lengthy suspension from the league’s authority.

The striker subsequently received a fine from Atleti while he also refused to train on one occasion, as his future at the club came under great scrutiny.

However, Diego Simeone has been a fierce defender of the former Chelsea striker, who now looks set to go straight back into Atleti’s first-team.
