Sao Paulo sign former Barcelona defender Dani Alves

Experienced Brazil full-back Dani Alves has joined Sao Paulo on a three-year deal, it has been confirmed by the club.

Barcelona had been linked with a return for their former defender, who left Paris Saint-Germain this summer following the expiration of his contract.

Diario AS had cited a report in Goal outlining the agreement earlier on Thursday before the reports were confirmed, with the Brazilian also rejecting approaches from Juventus and Inter.

However, both Italian clubs only offered him contracts under two years, a factor that, despite him now being a 36-year-old, has been decisive in his decision to discard these offers and return to his country of birth after 17 years in Europe.

Alves, 36, played 391 games (netting 21 goals and providing 103 assists) with Barça between 2008 and 2016, after he joined the club from Sevilla.

The Brazil international has since had stints with Juventus and PSG but had once again been a free agent this summer.

Alves will leave European football as champion of the Copa América, being named the best player of the tournament and he has won a record 40 tournaments in his career.
