Atletico Madrid destroy rivals Real Madrid in US friendly win

Diego Costa scored four goals as Atletico Madrid beat arch rivals Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup in New Jersey.

Costa was later sent off in an action packed game, that saw Diego Simeone's side continue their unbeatene run in pre-seaosn.

The pair faced off for the first time since Real Madrid won 3-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano back in February, however Zinedine Zidane's side had no answer for Atletico's relentless attack.

Costa put Atletico in front after just 60 seconds, as his long range strike was deflected past Thibaut Courtois by Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, before new signing Joao Felix scored his first goal for the club on seven minutes – poking home Saul Niguez's cross from close range.

Angel Correa made it 3-0 on 19 minutes, with a fine turn and volley from the edge of the box, with Costa making it four on the half hour mark, as Niguez again capitalised on some poor Real Madrid defending to send the Spanish international in on Courtois' goal.

The former Chelsea man completed his hat trick on the stroke of half time, slotting home from the penalty spot, after he was fouled by Isco.

Costa picked up where he left off after the break, racing onto Felix's through-ball to make it 6-0 on 51 minutes, with Ramos unable to get back in time to prevent a goal.

Zidane's side did look to rally, with Nacho Fernandez, before Costa and Dani Caravjal were both sent off for their part in a 20-player bust up after Costa cynically fouled the defender.

Vitolo restored Atletico's six-goal lead on 70 minutes, with a driving run and shot, before Karim Benzema scored a penalty and teenage striker Javier Carrera scored late consolations for Zidane.
