Ferland Mendy to miss La Liga season start

Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy will miss the start of the La Liga season through injury.

The French international suffered a thigh injury during the club's pre-season tour of North America, and he is likely to be out of first team action until after the September international break.

The club confirmed the news this morning, however he is expected to remain with the squad as they complete their pre-season schedule with a New York-based friendly with rivals Atletico Madrid, before facing Tottenham in friendly game in Germany.

Mendy, who joined Zinedine Zidane's side in a €48m deal in June, from Ligue 1 side Lyon, was expected to start the season as first choice left back, starting after playing in both of their pre-season games against Bayern Munich and Arsenal.

Zidane is now expected to start the season with veteran Brazilian international Marcelo at left back, as Mendy continues his recovery back in the Spanish capital.

Zidane will also be without Marco Asensio for the majority of the 2019-20 season, after he suffered a serious knee injury, with former Manchester City midfielder Brahim Diaz also out of action for the next six weeks,
