Filipe Luis confirms Atletico Madrid departure

Filipe Luis has confirmed his exit from Atletico Madrid after eight years at the club.

The 33-year old's contract expired at the end of June, however he had delayed an announcement on his future until after Brazil's success in the 2019 Copa America tournament.

The left back has revealed his plans to join Brazilian side Flamengo on a two-year deal in an emotional farewell press conference at the Wanda Metropolitano.

"Today is not a sad day for me.

"It is a happy day for me, because I have given my all for this club and I have great memories of playing here."

Luis is one of a number of long serving players to leave the club this summer, with Juanfran and Diego Godin already departing – as three members of the 2013-14 La Liga winning defence.

His move back to Brazil is likely to be his last as a professional, and the former Chelsea full back is exicted by the challenge.

"I have been a Flamenguista since I was young.

"But leaving Atletico is not an easy decision to make, but I want to end my career in Brazil."

As well as the title win in 2014, Luis also won two Europa League titles under Diego Simeone, across two spells at the club between 2010 and 2014, before returning from Stamford Bridge in 2015.
