Real Madrid lose to Bayern Munich in pre season opener

Real Madrid's 2019-20 pre season campaign started with defeat to Bayern Munich in the International Champions Cup.

Despite assembling over €300m worth of players ahead of the new season, manager Zinedine Zidane only handed a starting debut to Eden Hazard for the clash in Houston.

However the La Liga side were rusty in the opening exchanges, and fell behind on 15 minutes as Corentin Tolisso fired home from close range, after Marcelo blocked a shot on the goal line.

Zidane's side struggled to cope with Bayern's intensity in attack, and a second half quick fire double effectively ended the contest for the Spanish side.

First Robert Lewandowski netted a brilliant goal on 67 minutes, bringing down a long ball forward and turning past two Real Madrid challenges before curling home from 20 yards, and then Serge Gnabry made it 3-0 two minutes later, with the former Arsenal man capitalising on a defensive error.

Brazilian international Rodrygo netted a late consolation goal with three minutes remaining, on his own debut for the club, with a brilliant free kick, after Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich had been sent off for a professional foul on him.

Zidane is still finding his best formula for the new campaign, and he changed his entire XI at half time, handing debuts to Rodrygo, Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy and Takefusa Kubo.
