Alaves sign striker Joselu from Newcastle United

Alaves have completed the €2m (£1.7m) transfer of striker Joselu from Newcastle United, the club have confirmed.

The 29-year-old is the second striker from the Premier League to arrive at the Basque club this summer following the deal for West Ham striker Lucas Perez.

The German-born forward scored six goals across 46 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, having joined from Stoke City in a reported £5m deal in the summer of 2017.

Joselu – who has signed a three-year contract – is thought to have taken a cut in wages to return to La Liga and there have been claims that Newcastle rejected a £10m offer for the striker in January from a Chinese club.

The striker began his career at Celta Vigo before switching to Real Madrid, where he scored two goals – including in an 8-1 La Liga thumping of Almeria – despite playing just 18 minutes of first-team action.

He subsequently played for Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga before an £8m switch to Stoke in 2015.
