Inter confirm signing of Diego Godin

Inter have completed the signing of free agent Diego Godin on a three-year contract following his release from Atletico Madrid, it has been confirmed.

The Uruguayan defender saw his contract in Madrid expire this summer and he had long been heavily linked with a move to the Milanese giants, who are said to have agreed a deal for him months ago.

It has also been reported that he will become the club’s highest-paid player thanks to a salary worth up to €6.75m.

Godin had spent nine years with Los Rojiblancos and made 389 first-team appearances winning a host of trophies including the 2014 La Liga title, two Europa League crowns and three European Super Cups.

He has 131 caps for Uruguay and represented his country at nine major tournaments, although he was unable to stop them from going out on penalties to Peru in the Copa America quarter-finals.

Juanfran Torres, Filipe Luis and Godin are all out of contract at Los Rojiblancos, while fellow defender Lucas Hernandez has already joined Bayern Munich.

Godin becomes the Nerazzurri’s first summer signing and could be followed shortly by Hertha Berlin winger Valentino Lazaro, who has landed in Milan for a medical.
