Thomas Vermaelen leads four Barcelona exits

Thomas Vermaelen, Douglas Pereira, Jeison Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng are all set to leave Barcelona today when their contracts expire.

In the cases of Murillo and Boateng – both loan arrivals in January – their short-term deals are set to expire and they will return to their parent clubs Valencia and Sassuolo respectively.

Long-serving defenders Vermaelen and Douglas will also both depart the Camp Nou as their contracts expire, and they will become free agents.

Both defenders joined the Blaugrana in the summer of 2014 but for varying reasons have seen their first-team appearances heavily limited.

Vermaelen, previously of Arsenal, suffered a series of injuries while Douglas featured in just eight Barca games and enjoyed loan spells at Sporting Gijon, Benfica, and Sivasspor.

Murillo was signed in January to provide cover due to Samuel Umtiti’s but ultimately played just 293 minutes for the club, divided across four games.

Boateng too featured in just four matches for the Blaugrana and played a total of 303 minutes, but also failed to make an impact.
