Fernando Torres has revealed the reasons behind his decision to retire after 18 years in professional football.

The former Atletico Madrid and Spain striker confirmed on June 21 that he would be playing his final ever game, for current club Sagan Tosu, on June 23, and he provided details on his decision in the post match press conference.

"I feel really proud of everything I have achieved in my career.

"When I was younger, all I thought about was winning trophies, but as I've have got older, I have realised that winning the respect of other is more important."

"I have always demanding the highest level from myself, and I believe that the time where I will not perform at that level is coming.

"Because of that, I have made this decision, as I want to put an end to my career before it stops being fun."

Torres also confirmed that he would play again for Tosu, with his final game against former Spain team mates David Villa and Andres Iniesta with Vissel Kobe on August 23 - before taking up a coaching role with Tosu.

"I will say goodbye to football with two very good friends, who I have shared many great memories.

"I wanted to find an iconic moment to end my career with, and I think this is a perfect moment."
