Ferland Mendy – Real Madrid place not guaranteed

New Real Madrid full-back Ferland Mendy admits he may not be able to dislodge long-term regular Marcelo in the starting line-up.

The France international joined Los Blancos in a €55m deal from Lyon earlier this month and, with question marks over Marcelo’s long-term form, may be tipped to be a regular starter.

“It's a joy to be in the best club in the world, I hope to win many titles here,” Mendy told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“I'm here to learn, to give my everything – that's my goal, Real Madrid can help me a lot and also as a way of life.

“Zinedine Zidane? I have not talked to him yet, I hope to do so soon because he is a big part of me coming here, he has been very special for me since I was a child.

“Raphael Varane? We talked and he told me that it is the biggest club in the world, and that he was going to help me integrate into the squad?

“Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe? Why not? They are very good players but I have not spoken with either of them about Madrid, only with Varane.

“Marcelo? We are both very keen to play as much as we can but we both know it is the decision of the Coach as to who plays more throughout the season.

“I am very happy to be part of Madrid and Marcelo has already enjoyed a great career here.”
