The La Liga investigation, Operation Oikos, into corruption and match fixing in Spain, has now turned its attention to Serie A.
Reports in Spanish newspaper Marca, confirm that former Real Valladolid striker Borja Fernandez, who was arrested on June 7, has been released by police investigators, due to a lack of evidence against him.
He had originally been arrested following betting irregularities around Valladolid's final game of the 2018-19 La Liga season, where they lost 2-0 to Valencia CF, with Fernandez announcing his retirement following the game.
The former Getafe midfielder was accused of being criminally involved with ex-Real Madrid defender Raul Bravo, who is the alleged ringleader of a spate of match fixing in La Liga, however no evidence was found that the pair actually met.
Former veteran La Liga forward Carlos Aranda is still under investigation however, although Real Valladolid are no longer believed to be of interest in the investigation.
Aranda remains central to the investigations, with potential links to Lazio forward Ciro Immobile and Mattia Mariotti, now being looked into.
Marca claims police are looking into phone conversations between Aranda and Mariotti, which allege the former requested assistance with contacting a third party to facilitate match fixing, and the latter agreed to play an intermediary role.
Immobile is not believed to be being investigated directly in relation to match fixing, but the suggestion in the recorded conversation between Aranda and Mariotti, is that the Italian international is a member of an illegal gambling club.
The final allegation into Serie A relates to authorities looking into Aranda and Mariotti potentially fixing games involving the recently relegated Frosinone CF.
