Rubi: Europe is the goal for Real Betis next season

New Real Betis manager Rubi has challenged his new players to qualify for Europe next season.

In his first press conference at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, the former Espanyol manager, stated his ambitions for the season ahead after swapping Catalonia for Andalucia.

"This is a magical moment and the club has big plans for this season.

"I know the fans were disappointed to miss out on European qualification last season, but that is the target in 2019-20."

Rubi, who led Espanyol to Europa League qualification on the final day of last season, left the RCDE Stadium in amid controversy – but he reaffirmed his respect for his former club and wished them well in the future.

"I will always have respect for Espanyol, but now I am with Betis.

"We always had a difficult game against Betis (at Espanyol) and the standard of player at the club is spectacular."

Rubi was criticised at times for being definsive in his tactics, with Espanyol, and he hinted that he will be just as pragmatic in his new role.

"I have a plan for how I want to play, and I believe the players will respond to that, and I will make changes if needed.

"We need to stay motivated and play to win, but to take care of the ball when we need to.

"I want to see the team win and I know that fans here are used to 4-3 wins, but if I see a 4-3 win I am disappointed with the three goals conceded.
