Villarreal hopeful on Santi Cazorla renewal

Villarreal are hopeful of extending the contract of midfielder Santi Cazorla and face a ‘key week’ in negotiations, say Diario AS.

The 34-year-old has been a revelation for the Yellow Submarine this campaign, making 46 first-team appearances having previously overcome a series of injury nightmares.

Cazorla signed a one-year contract at the club last summer having previously sat out over 20 months of action after two serious ankle injuries, with his playing days feared to be over.

Last August, the former Gunners playmaker made his first appearance in 636 days last month following his last outing in October 2016, after a serious of injury problems.

Cazorla has previously played for seven seasons across two spells at the Yellow Submarine whilst also representing Recreativo de Huelva and Malaga.

The Spaniard has had to undergo eight operations while he previously explained that doctors had told him he would be lucky to walk again.

However, he has enjoyed a rich vein of form this campaign with his performances seeing him earn a recall to the Spain national team.

Cazorla earns just €500k per annum at Villarreal alongside a bonus for each game played.
