Sergio Ramos to set international world record

Sergio Ramos is on the verge of setting a new world record of victories as an international player as Spain play the Faroe Islands on Friday.

The current record is held by Iker Casillas – a former Real Madrid and Spain teammate of Ramos – who recorded 121 victories across 167 games for his nation at a win rate of 72.4%.

Ramos is set to break that record should La Roja defeat the Faroes on Friday in his 164th international cap, with the record for Spain appearances now within touching distance.

Spain players have a stranglehold of victories at international level, with next on the list being former Barcelona midfielders Xavi Hernandez (100 from 133) and Andres Iniesta (96 from 131).

Next up on that list if Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has gathered 92 international victories for Portugal despite sitting out his side’s qualification campaign for the UEFA Nations League finals.

The report in Marca claims that the next challenge for Ramos will be to surpass the 16 years of Casillas playing with the international setup, having made his international debut in March 2005.
