Atletico Madrid to sign Felipe Monteiro from Porto

Atletico Madrid are on the verge of signing FC Porto defender Felipe Monteiro after he confirmed he was leaving the Portuguese giants.

Marca report that his transfer to Los Rojiblancos will be confirmed ‘in the coming days’ and will primarily fill the gap left by the outgoing Diego Godin.

The Brazilian defender is close to completing his third season at the Portuguese giants having signed from Corinthians in the summer of 2016.

The 29-year-old has subsequently earned international recognition with Brazil and has become one of the mainstays in the defence of Porto.

“These have been three intense years as a blue and white and this era will be remembered for the rest of my life,” Felipe wrote on social media.

“I just have to thank the club's fans, all the workers, the president, the coaches and the teammates with whom I lived during all this time.”

His defensive partner Eder Militao has already agreed a €50m summer switch to Real Madrid while teammates Alex Telles and Hector Herrera have also previously been linked to Atleti.

Felipe has been trusted by successive managers Nuno Espirito Santo and Sergio Conceicao and the report claims he is now one of the most sought-after defenders in European football.

Real Madrid were also strongly linked to the Brazilian in the past but it is said that his €50m release clause was sufficient to derail their interest at the time.

However, his contract in Portugal expires in 2021 and the club acknowledge that his market value now falls beneath this.
