Luis Suarez: Surgery was the only option

Luis Suarez has called out his critics after he opted to undergo surgery and miss FC Barcelona's final three games of the season.

Following their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Liverpool back on May 7th, Suarez went under the knife to cure a troublesome knee problem.

However his decision to have surgery has drawn criticism from some supporters, particularly as it meant he was unavailable for their Copa del Rey final defeat to Valencia.

"I believe I have to clarify my position, after things have been said to question my professionalism, Suarez posted on his Twitter account.

"At the start of season I had a issue with my knee, but thanks to the GREAT WORK of the FC Barcelona medical staff I was able to manage it.

"With that situation under control, I then I suffered a tear to my meniscus ligament in the game against Liverpool.

"This is why I feel I have to clarify to those who have questioned me, surgery was the only option with this injury.

"Ever since arriving at this club I have given 100% as it is my dream to be here."

Suarez is expected to be fit to play for Uruguay in the Copa America in June, with a return to light training expected later this week.
