Lionel Messi wins SIXTH European Golden Shoe

FC Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi has claimed his sixth European Golden Shoe after netting 36 La Liga goals in 2018-19.

The award, given for the most goals scored in a domestic European league, goes to Messi for the third successive season after he finished ahead of French international Kylian Mbappe – who scored 33 for Ligue 1 champions PSG.

Messi has dominated the award, alongside his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo, with 2018-19 the 11th time that either he or the Portuguese international has topped the European scoring charts.

It is the twelfth season that the award has been won by a La Liga player, with Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan winning it in 2009, following Ronaldo – while he was at Manchester United in 2008 and AS Roma's Francesco Totti in 2007.

Messi has already scored 50 goals for FC Barcelona in all competitions this season, the sixth time he has done so in his career at the Camp Nou, ahead of this weekend's Copa del Rey final against Valencia CF.
