Atletico Madrid move for Athletic Bilbao’s Yeray Alvarez

Atletico Madrid plan to activate the €30m release clause of Athletic Club Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez this summer, report El Mundo.

The 24-year-old has made 32 first-team appearances for the Basque club this season and he is seen to be an affordable upgrade for Los Rojiblancos.

The central defender has twice overcome testicular cancer, but after missing nine months of action he has been a fixture in Athletic’s first-team squad since February 2018.

A host of defenders are leaving Atleti this summer – the exits of Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin and Juanfran Torres have all been confirmed.

Meanwhile Filipe Luis is also set to depart at the end of his contract while full-back Santiago Arias has also been linked to a summer departure.

The report claims Atleti already have a transfer budget of €176m this summer while that figure could rise to a total of €246m should midfielder Rodri’s €70m release clause be activated this summer.

Porto defender Felipe is also thought to be close to agreeing a deal to join Atleti this summer.
