Royston Drenthe has detailed his time at Real Madrid including describing how teammate Robinho “turned his basement into a nightclub.”
The Dutchman spent three seasons at the Bernabeu after joining from Feyenoord in 2007 but surprisingly quit football altogether in 2016, aged just 29.
Diario AS cite an interview the former winger conducted with FourFourTwo in which he spoke of his decision to join Madrid.
“I heard that 16 clubs were interested in me, I spoke with the president of Barcelona, (Joan) Laporta, and with (Pedja) Mijatovic, the sports director of Real Madrid.
“It felt as if he had met almost all the top managers. Of all the clubs, most of them offered me a five-year contract with more or less the same conditions, and as soon as I learned that Real Madrid was interested, I decided to go there.
“When I was a kid, I was fascinated by everything that surrounded Madrid, and the glamour surrounding the club, like when I saw the movie Goal, it was something I really wanted to be a part of.
“Immediately I felt at home, everyone gave me a warm welcome, Guti was great with me immediately, and he was a 'man' of Madrid, a legend.
“I developed a good relationship with Robinho shortly after I sometimes went to his house, where he had turned his basement into a nightclub.”
