Zidane: The best thing is that the season is over

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is glad to see the end of the 2018-19 season, following their final day defeat to Real Betis.

Los Blancos end the season in third place in La Liga, with 68 points, their lowest tally since 2002 – and the Frenchman is relieved that a difficult campaign has come to a conclusion.

"The best thing that has happened to us is that the season has finished.

"The players have found it hard to be motivated, when they have been playing for nothing since my return.

"However we cannot forget about this season, as it must serve as an example of how to improve next season."

Real ended the season, with back to back league defeats for the first time since October 2018, under Julen Lopetegui, and the former Galactico made no excuses for their poor showing against Quique Setien's side.

"We can have no exceuses for today's performance.

"I can see that the players want to do better, but at the moment they are not able to do that.

"However, I am convinced that we can turn this situation around over the summer and next season."

Zidane was also asked about the futures of Keylor Navas and Gareth Bale – who was an unused substitute – but he stated that no decision had yet been made on either player.
