Atletico Madrid winger Vitolo linked to Villarreal

Villarreal are studying the possibility of signing Atletico Madrid winger Vitolo this summer, according to a report in Marca.

The report acknowledges that there may be difficulties in the deal, namely the player’s current wage packet and the strong investment Atleti showed in him just two summers ago.

The Spain international signed a five-year contract at Los Rojiblancos lasting through until the summer of 2022 while his transfer fee at the time was a significant €36m.

Villarreal are said to be monitoring the numbers which may be involved in such a deal but ‘have not yet taken any firm steps’ that would trigger a summer move.

The winger has been disrupted by a series of hamstring injuries in his first two seasons in the Spanish capital and he has only started 13 matches in La Liga, often cutting a frustrated figure.

His one goal this season came in the Copa del Rey against Sant Andreu and he is a player who has faded from prominence in Diego Simeone’s side.

He could be the latest player to depart Atleti, who appear to be undergoing a mass overhaul of their playing staff this summer.
