Barcelona, Real Madrid battle for Ajax’s Donny van de Beek

Barcelona and Real Madrid are tracking the potential of a summer move for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, claim El Mundo Deportivo.

The 22-year-old Dutch international has scored 17 goals this season, including the only goal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Tottenham.

The Dutch giants were involved in late heartbreak in that tie as they were eliminated on away goals after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate, with many members of the squad now tipped to depart.

Van de Beek’s teammate Frenkie de Jong has already agreed an €86m switch to Barcelona this summer while defender and club captain Matthijs de Ligt has also been linked.

Now their club and international teammate has been linked with both sides of the divide in El Clasico and could be available at a more affordable price.

The central midfielder has spent the entirety of his professional career at the Amsterdam-based giants and has won international recognition for the Netherlands.

The report in El Mundo Deportivo has likened the Ajax situation to the summer of 1988, when Barca signed three players from Real Sociedad.
