Barcelona’s Luis Suarez season over after knee surgery

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez will not play again this season after undergoing knee surgery, according to multiple reports.

El Mundo Deportivo cite how the Uruguayan striker will be unavailable for between four and six weeks due to the surgery, ruling him out of all remaining fixtures.

That includes the Copa del Rey final against Valencia later this month alongside the club’s remaining league games against Getafe and Eibar.

It will also impact upon the 32-year-old’s participation in the Copa America this summer – he is unlikely to be available for the opening group games in the tournament.

The news of Suarez’s surgery was confirmed officially by the Blaugrana on Thursday afternoon with all reports pointing to a minimum layoff of one month.

“The first team player Luis Suarez has a medial meniscus injury in his right knee and has been operated on by Dr. Cugat, undergoing arthroscopic surgery under the supervision of the Club's medical staff,” read a club statement.

“The Uruguayan will be out for around four to six weeks.

“As such, the FC Barcelona striker will miss the three remaining fixtures this season, the league games against Getafe and Eibar and the Copa del Rey final against Valencia on 25 May in Seville.”

Suarez has a strike rate of 25 goals in 49 games across all competitions this season.
