Real Madrid want Luka Modric stay

Real Madrid have told midfielder Luka Modric they will count on him for next season despite reports to the contrary.

Cadena Cope have said that Zinedine Zidane has personally informed the midfielder that he wants to be able to call on the Croatian beyond this summer.

It follows from a report in Diario AS that the player, who won multiple individual awards in 2018, would be allowed to leave by the Frenchman.

That report claimed that the coaching staff at Los Blancos are concerned that the Croatian international’s performance levels are in permanent decline.

The tactician held a meeting with senior dressing room figures to try turn Los Blancos poor form around and made clear his unhappiness at their recent performances.

The clear the air talk had little effect, as they lost their next game against Rayo Vallecano and Zidane slammed his side’s display in his post-match Press conference.

Los Merengues would reportedly now be willing to listen to offers for the 33-year-old Ballon d’Or winner, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen tipped to replace him at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Italian side Inter went through a protracted transfer saga last year in their attempt to sign Modric, but they could now return to the negotiation table.

There is set to be somewhat of a squad overhaul at Madrid this summer after a hugely disappointing campaign.
