POST MATCH: Real Madrid see off Villarreal in 3-2 goal fest

Real Madrid secured third place in La Liga, with a 3-2 win at home to relegation battling Villarreal this weekend.

Manager Zinedine Zidane continued his policy of end-of-season rotations, and it was one of his new faces that secured all three points for Los Blancos against Javi Calleja's determined visitors.

Mariano Diaz has been a forgotten man at the Santiago Bernabeu this season, and although his future under Zidane remains uncertain, he opened the scoring after just two minutes -running onto Brahim Diaz's through ball to slot home.

Villarreal hit back ten minutes later, as Pablo Fornals dispossessed Casemiro in midfield and Gerard Moreno smashed home a fine effort from 20 yards out.

Real Madrid were back in front just before the break, as Jesus Vallejo netted his first goal for the club, taping home from close range as Andres Fernandez saved Marcelo's long range strike.

The home side continued to have the edge after the break, and Mariano got his second of the day on 49 minutes as he arrived on cue to steer home Dani Carvajal's low cross.

The visitors looked to launch a fightback in the second half, but Real Madrid looked more likely to score a fourth as the game ticked on.

Calleja's side did find a consolation goal in added time, as substitute Jaume Costa finished with aplomb from the edge of the box as Real Madrid were hit on the counter attack.
