Effenberg: James Rodriguez has to leave Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich legend Stefan Effenberg believes James Rodriguez has no choice but to leave Bayern Munich, if he wants to save his career.

Rodriguez completes a two year loan from the Santiago Bernabeu to the Bavarian club at the end of the 2018-19 season, and Zinedine Zidane's side are reluctant to take him back.

Effenberg believes the Colombian international needs a career overhaul, and he should sever ties with both clubs in the coming months.

"James has to leave Bayern, he told Diario AS.

"If you look at his situation at the club, you realise he has to leave.

Rodriguez has become a bit-part player under Niko Kovac, making the majority of his appearances as a substitute in 2019, and Effenberg believes he has lost his passion for playing.

"He needs to be having fun whilst playing and that does not happen with appearances of seven, 10, 12 or 15 minutes."

Bayern do have a purchase option of €42m on the former Monaco man, agreed back in 2017, however the former German international believes it is best if he makes a clean break.

"Maybe he should re-orientate himself completely.

"At Real Madrid it will also be difficult for him to get minutes on the pitch, so he needs a change."
